Obama - Please Wake Up

Every day I have more doubts about Obama and what he is doing. Occassionally he will do something brilliant, like getting Paul Volcker on his financial team, but then he does something stupid, like putting Geithner and Summers in charge, allowing them to basically push Volcker aside. Now in another bone-headed move, he is consolidating even more power with Geithner and Summers. Yves does a good job of explaining the situation at Naked Capitalism. This is not going well . . .

Summers is stone crazy and the ultimate we-can-go-back-to-the-way-we-were bullshitter. His appointment completed my disillusionment with Obama. I'm sorry I voted for Obama now, and see him more as a typical Illinois politician -- who will do and say whatever it takes to get elected -- than as someone interested in and capable of changing government for the better.

Guys/Ladies

While some of Obamas appointments are puzzling or even troubling to progressives, let's not forget the parameters he is working with. First of all the entire establishment has proved itself corrupt when it is not ignorant as well. This makes it exceedingly difficult to find "clean hands" to man the ship. Secondly the few credible progressive appointments possible would create such a maelstorm of criticism as to make it difficult to govern. Finally, Obamas' actions so far have been commendable: e.g., the Lilly Ledbeter Act; health insurance for uninsured children and of course the stimulus. While we need to enunciate our concerns on the appointments I would reserve a final judgement. There is a lot of work to do.
